Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is an activist in the field of feminist media, public speaker and Canadian. Feminist Frequency is a site which hosts video and commentary looking at the portrayal of women by popular media. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning feminist journalist from Canada and a blogger. Feminist Frequency is a website dedicated to education, which examines gender roles within popular culture, is directed by Sarkeesian. She is committed to deconstructing stereotypes about women and how they are portrayed in popular media. Additionally, she is working to increase awareness about cyber-bullying targeting females and other minorities of people. A graduate in the field of political and social thinking from York University Sarkeesian is also a much sought-after public speaker and she has delivered speech at TEDxWomen's XOXO Festival and the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. Sarkeesian was fascinated by female issues as well as feminism from an early age. As of 2009, as she was a student at a university, Sarkeesian founded the site Feminist Frequency. The woman was determined and was planning to launch a web series which would explore the role of gender in gaming. But, she discovered herself as the victim of an internet harassment campaign. Although the incident did not deter her instead it strengthened her determination as a feminist media critic. Her numerous contributions to the field of feminist have been recognized by numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian, a media journalist who has received numerous awards and created Feminist Frequency an educational and non-profit organization that examines how women are represented in popular culture narratives.
